Who Is My God
The world defines God in many ways. The Concise Heritage Dictionary defines God as, “A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe, the principal object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions.” Dr. Norman Geisler defines God as, “one indivisible, infinite, necessary, absolutely perfect Uncaused Cause of everything that exist.” The dictionary in the back of the Master Study Bible, NASB states, “The existence of God is simply assumed as an indubitable fact throughout scriptures…texts contain the well-known ontological, cosmological, physicoteleological, historico-teleological and ethical arguments for the existence of God.” These definitions are all intellectually and factually sound, but my God is not just an Absolute Being, a Necessary First Cause; He is absolutely my Creator, Sustainer, Savior, and Heavenly Father. I know this from first-hand interaction with a living and interactive Triune God of all.
Genesis 1:1 begins with “In the Beginning God” as God existed before all. He existed before creation, outside of creation as the Creator. Because finite humans possess finite understanding, man is limited in his understanding of God, but God gave man the ability to communicate with Him, receive and finitely understand (analogically) His revelation because He created man in His Image (Genesis 1:26). God communicated directly to Moses from the burning bush in Exodus 3, describing Himself saying, “I AM Who I Am.” In Romans 1:20, Paul explains that man can know God, through His creation. Dr. Dennis Frey, President of Masters International University of Divinity, in his video lecture, “Systematic Theology I”, explains, “God is pure, an unchangeable Being. Dr. Tony Taylor, in his Sunday Bible Study series, “Bereshith Genesis, Foundations of Our Faith”, states, “Genesis is the beginning of God revealing Himself through His Word to man, beginning with Creation.” God is the Perfect Creator, the Pure Actuality, and the First Cause, of all. He created man in His Image. He is interactive in His creation, and He reveals Himself to me personally through His creation and His Word as well as directly speaking to me as we are bonded in prayer (“tfilia: communal bonding between God and His child”).
The Bible is the inerrant Word of God, God revealing his moral law (though man is aware of moral right and wrong in Romans 2:15), his desires for man, His plan of redemption through His Son Jesus Christ, and lastly, in Revelation, an eternal life for His Children and eternal damnation for those who turn from God. Jesus says in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in truth; Thy Word is truth.” 2 Timothy 3:16 states, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for teaching, for correction, for training in righteousness.” The Old Testament reveals the fall of man and a sinful world in need of God. The New Testament reveals the plan God has to save man from himself. The Bible is the actual, historical account of God and man, God-breathed and recorded by man. It is the truth of God revealed to man in the Word of God.
My God is a triune God revealed in His Word through miracles, prophesy, and the greatest of all miracles, the coming of The Incarnate Christ, God in Man, the Messiah. I John 4:10 proclaims, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
My personal God revealed in creation, through His Word, through supernatural events called miracles, and realized in my heart through His saving of my soul, He is my God.
“In the beginning God created… I Am Who I Am… I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
