Last week we finished Chapter 7 where the sinful woman anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume. This week we begin with Luke 8 – that might be summarized with the phrase “The Importance and Power of Jesus’ Word”
Luke Lesson 14 Study Questions
1. On this second tour, the twelve were with Him. When He started the first tour of Galilee, the twelve _______ had not yet been formally _______.
2. Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward: “Herod’s epitropos. A king had many prerequisites and much private property; his epitropos was the official that looked after the king’s ________ interests…There could be no more _________ and important official.” (Barclay)
3. . He spoke by a parable: The idea behind the word parable is “to throw alongside of.” It is a story thrown __________ the truth intended to ______. Parables have been called “earthly stories with a heavenly meaning.”
4. As he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside… some fell on rock… some fell among thorns… others fell on good ground: In this parable the seed fell on four different types of _____. Though this is commonly called the parable of the sower, it could be better called the parable of the soils. The difference is never the ______, but on the kind of ______ it lands on.
5. The mysteries of the kingdom of God: In the Bible, a mystery isn’t something you can’t ________ out. It is something that you would never know unless God ________ it to you. In the Biblical sense, one might know what the mystery is; yet it is still a mystery because they would not have known unless God revealed it.
6. But none of them could understand the spiritual meaning until Jesus explained the key to them: The seed is the _____ of God (Luke 8:11). If you miss the ____, you miss the whole parable.
7. The seed is the word of God: Jesus likened the word of God (we could say both spoken and written) to be like ____. A seed has enormous power in itself for the generation of life and usefulness, if it is ________ (planted) in the right conditions.
8. This tells us that Satan is at work during the teaching and preaching of God’s word. Satan seems to believe in the power of God’s word more than many ___________ do; he knows that when it is _______ or preached, he needs to be busy against it.
9. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity: As seed falling among thorns would grow the stalks of grain among the thorns yet soon be choked out (Luke 8:7), so some ________ to the word and grow for a while, but are choked and stopped in their spiritual ______ by competition from unspiritual things.
10. Even more than describing the mixed progress of the gospel message, the parable of the sower compels the listener to ask, “What kind of _____ am I? How can I prepare my heart and mind to be the ______ kind of soil?” This parable invites action so that we will receive the word of God to full benefit.
11. One must either spread the word itself or spread the influence of God’s word by bringing others to a place where they will ______ it. It’s best to do _____.
12. Therefore take heed how you hear: It’s good to hear the word of God; it’s much better to take _____ to how you hear. In this, Jesus warned His listeners to actively prepare the soil of their ______ and mind, to judge themselves as hearers at least as much as they judge the preacher.
