We ended last week at Chapter 7:23 where Jesus was discussing religious externalism with his disciples. We pick up in verse 24 this week where Jesus in confronted by the Syro-Phoenician woman asking Jesus to cast out a demon from her daughter.

Mark Lesson 11 Study Questions

  1. Wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden: It is a glorious principle – Jesus cannot be hidden. Anytime Jesus is present at all, He finds a way to ________ lives, because He cannot be ________.
  2. Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs: The woman responded with great faith. First, she _______ her low place before Jesus by not debating the reference to little dogs. Second, she asked Jesus to deal with her on her own low level (even the little dogs under the table eat). She therefore ________ from Jesus.
  3. Greek word for impediment in his speech is mogilalon and is only used here in the New Testament. “Mark’s use of an extremely rare word to describe the man’s speech defect is almost certainly an allusion to Isaiah 35:5 which celebrates _____ as the one who comes in order to unstop the ears of the deaf and to provide ______ for the man of inarticulate speech.”
  4. . How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness? We can imagine Jesus hoping one of the disciples might say, “Jesus, You did this before. You can do the same kind of work again.” Jesus hoped they would regard His past ___________ as a promise to meet their _________ need.
  5. Broke them and gave them to the His disciples to set before them: Jesus did what He only could do – the ________ miracle. But Jesus left to the disciples to do what they could do – the _____________ of the bread.
  6. So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments: At the end of the meal, they gathered more bread than they had to begin with. This was __________ provision. The seven large baskets showed that God provided out of His ____________.

Testing Him: This was not a friendly encounter. The word tested could be translated ________. The Pharisees ________ Jesus to perform a miraculous sign just as Satan tempted Him to do so in the wilderness.

  1. No sign shall be given to this generation: Jesus refused because His miracles are not done with the intention of _________ hardened unbelievers. Instead, Jesus did miracles to show the _______ of God in the context of mercy. Those who believe that if people see enough signs they will come to faith presume to know more than Jesus did. He condemned the generation who sought a sign.
  2. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees: This leaven wasn’t merely yeast, but a pinch of dough left over from the previous batch, as in the making of sourdough bread. This was how bread was commonly leavened in the ancient world, and a little pinch of dough from the old lump could make a whole new lump of dough rise and “puff up.” So, the work of leaven was considered an illustration of the work of ____ and ______. The presence of a little can corrupt a large amount.
  3. Do you not remember? Their understanding should have been based on seeing what Jesus already did. We can always take the past ____________ of God as a promise for His _________ love and care.
  4. He put His hands on his eyes again: This is the only “________” or “__________” healing described in the ministry of Jesus. It is another example of the variety of healing methods Jesus used.
  5. Jesus probably choose this method at this time as an illustration to His disciples, showing them then that their spiritual blindness – shown in the previous passage – will be ________, but only __________.
